Is it alright for to dance ballet 3 days after getting a sprained ankle?

Hi Serenity, Sorry to hear about your ankle right before your show. But, you did say you had been to a doctor and he said it was a mild sprain. You are very lucky, no broken bones. I think the ice, keeping it elevated and staying off of if as much as possible will probably help the most. As for your teacher's recommendation, I would strongly advise against it without your doctor's approval. I'm only guessing that she is recommending a strong "water pill." If she is, most water pills deplete the body's potium level quickly and if not replaced with a potium supplement of some type you can have dire results. The results might not be immediate, but with dancing and prespiring it could drop your body's electrolyte levels dangerously low. Since you have already seen a doctor, I would strongly advise calling his/her office and explaining your situation and seeing what they recommend. Maybe it would be okay if you wrapped your ankle for support before dancing. But, I don't know how well that would work for you dancing on pointes. Either way, I would really hate for you to miss your performance; but I think it would be worse if you damaged your ankle and couldn't dance in the future. I would suggest calling the office ASAP today though because the doctor may want to look at your ankle again before he gives you a decision and Fridays are usually pretty busy days. Good luck with ankle and what ever decision you make. Sincerely, Lyn LPN
