Can I grow seedlings in old tin cans?

I saw a photo of seedlings growing in washed out old food cans. Will this work? Worried about aluminium particles leaching into the compost. Would this make say, a totmato plant poisonous or am I worrying about nothing. (after all the can contained food in the first place). Confused...
