How should I get in the habit of using downstrokes instead of upstrokes?

My guitar book says that I should be using downstrokes at this stage (I've only been learning for a week), but I find myself using upstrokes almost all the time. Unless I consciously tell myself before a practice song to use downstrokes, I ALWAYS end up using upstrokes. What should I do?
