Seniors, Why do they call jeans or pants a pair when it is one unit when sewn together?

I realize there are two legs, but a blouse has two sleeves, a coat has two sleeves and a bra has two "cups". Socks are two separate pieces as are shoes, so why do we call jeans a pair of jeans? My son and I had fun bantering this question.
